Brother Robert Brouillette

Brother Robert Brouillette

Former Damien Religion and History Teacher

Arrested in child predator sting operation – Convicted of child porn – Subject of three sex abuse lawsuits

In 1997, Brother Robert Brouillette was arrested in Cook County, Illinois, when he attempted to meet a police officer posing as a 12-year-old boy. The cleric had met the undercover officer in a sting operation targeting child predators.

When questioned by police, Brouillette admitted to collecting and distributing more than 400 images of child pornography. Brouillette was not charged in the police sting but was convicted of ten counts of possession of child pornography. He was sentenced to four years probation.

At least three former students have come forward and filed child sex abuse and cover-up lawsuits against Brouillette and the Irish Christian Brothers. The suits allege that Brouillette abused children in Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois and New Mexico and that the Irish Christian Brothers intentionally moved him from state to state to cover up his abuse. The order also sent him to the St. John Vianney Center, a church-run treatment facility for predator clerics in 2004.

Brouillette has since left the order and changed his name to Robert Sullivan.

According to the incomplete Damien yearbook collection, Brouillette was a history and religion teacher. Yearbooks say that he worked at the school during the years 1971-1973, 1985-1988. During the 1972-1973 school year, he worked with Thomas Cuthbert Ford.

To date, the Irish Christian Brothers and the Diocese of Honolulu have not publicly disclosed that Brouillette worked at Damien. They have not reached out to victims, nor informed the community of Brouillette’s crimes.
