Honolulu Star Advertiser: Victims of church sexual abuse need criminal lawyers, not therapyMay 10, 2013 | Posted By Joelle Casteix

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Hawaii, via a newspaper ad that ran Monday, is offering therapy treatment and reconciliation for the victims of sex abuse.

Directing victims to go to the diocese for help is like sending the sheep back to the wolves. The diocese had the chance years ago to help victims, but did not act because, at the time, the statute of limitations protected the church. Instead, people claiming abuse were vilified, accused of seeking money, and told that the limitations had expired on their cases. Now that the two-year window has been opened, the church is scurrying to connect with the victims.

Both are retired, which means that they do not work in a parish, school, or hospital full time. February 5, 2012 | By Lee Catterall

Amid national outrage of reports about sexual abuse of children at Penn State and Syracuse universities, the Hawaii Legislature is taking a second look at a proposal to stretch the period that victims of child sexual abuse can file lawsuits against alleged perpetrators.

"There is an epidemic of child sex abuse around the world," Marci A. Hamilton, a law professor at New York City's Yeshiva University, told Hawaii legislators in the current session. "At least one in four girls is sexually abused and at least one in five boys. Sadly, 90 percent never go to the authorities and the vast majority of claims expire before the victims are capable of getting to court."
